Forth Exercise Set

Due: Friday, March 24. Please note that these problems are good review for the second hour exam on Monday, March 27.

The file "Hoh River College" in the handouts folder on Plato contains several files:

• student.dat - file of students (you may need to rename some of these files)
• faculty.dat - file of faculty
• class.dat - file of classes offered by the Hoh River College
• teaches.dat - association between faculty and classes
• enroll.dat - association between students and classes (with a numeric grade)
• class.ctl - an example sqlldr80 command file to load the class table with data from class.dat
• college.com, college.sh - some old ingres/quel command files which won't work for Oracle, but which can be used to get an idea of how tables should be organized.

Please create the database using data from the ".dat" files above in an Oracle account (see note on group efforts below) and load the data into the tables. Turn in

• A printed list of the SQL create table/create index statements. In specifying the tables you should consider
  • primary key constraints
  • foreign key constraints
  • appropriate indexes (include justifications for all indexes specified, and also include justifications if you do not specify an index over a primary or a foreign key.
• listings from the tables (select * from student; for example). Do not turn in more than the first 10 - 20 entries for each table.

Papers should be stapled in order, with the name(s) of those working on the exercise. Group work on this project is encouraged. If you do work as a group, please turn in only one document (with the names of everyone in the group who participated). Each group should decide on an Oracle account belonging to one member of the group to work in, and everyone in the group should know the password for that account (the account will need to be shared for several exercises). If a project group works together on this exercise, using the group account would be fine. It is not required, of course, that you divide up into project groups. Work should be turned in during class on Friday, March 24.
